Sky joins video on-demand scrum

Sky TV is to launch a subscription video on demand service before the end of 2014, tackling head-first Telecom’s ShowmeTV and Netflix – both of which plan to launch around the same time.

Sky’s SVOD service will stand alone from its pay television offering, and will (like ShowmeTV and Netflix) make TV series and movies available to non-Sky customers.

“This is a really exciting new development for Sky,” said ceo John Fellet. “This new service will appeal to many Kiwis who want the flexibility to watch movies and TV series when they want on a variety of devices.

“We love great content at Sky and this new service will provide another really convenient way to watch the shows and movies Kiwis love. Our team has a huge amount of experience working with local and international content suppliers. We are working hard to secure a top quality selection of content for this service.”

Sky customers will be able to enjoy this on-demand content, delivered via the internet for no additional cost to their My Sky decoders or via Sky Go.

Sky will also be expanding its successful partnership with Vodafone who will bundle Sky’s SVOD service with their broadband.

The partnership formed in 2009 has already seen 100,000 NZ homes taking Sky and Vodafone services together.
