Tauranga’s Bayfair Shopping Centre has won an award – in Sydney – for its nation-leading accessibility programme at the Shopping Centre Council of Australia Marketing Awards. Bayfair picked up A$2500 for its win, which they have donated to the Omanu Surf Life Saving Club.

That money will be spent on special wheelchairs that work at the beach.

“Imagine not being able to feel the sand between your toes,” says Jade Alexander of Alexander PR Auckland, who works on the Bayfair account.

“Or find grains of sand in your sandwiches? For most of us accessing the beach is something we might not even consider on a day-today-day basis, however for many of us, access can be difficult and limited.

“Over 800,000 New Zealanders have a disability of some kind, and this does not include older people, parents with young children, people with temporary illnesses, and visitors from overseas who may have limited understanding of the English language and Kiwi culture.

“The donation is destined for great things at its grateful recipient, Omanu Surf Life Saving Club. Both the club and Bayfair have a similar vision in mind of creating more accessible beaches throughout Tauranga.”
