Auckland agency Boyd PR has written a children’s story book for the Northland Rescue Helicopter that brings the service’s three choppers – nicknamed Juliet, Mike and Lima – to life.
Produced in-house, Juliet to the Rescue is not only a ripping good yarn for kids, it was devised as a fun and interactive fundraising initiative for the Whangarei-based rescue service.
Illustrated by Boyd PR creative director and artist, Tony McNeight, the story is an adventure tale for kids that follows Jack, Poppy and Tama as they go in search of Northland landmark the Hole In the Rock.
The ambitious trio, along with their dog Monty, strike some bad luck when the weather turns nasty and destroys their home-made raft.
Senior account director Scott Kara says the Northland Rescue Helicopter has been a client for almost six years and the Boyd team is always on the hunt for fun and creative ways to help raise funds.
“The Northland Rescue Helicopter, like the other helicopter rescue operations around New Zealand, rely heavily on donations and sponsorship so we try and assist with this whenever possible,” he said.
“The idea for the story book came from the fact the helicopters all have nicknames and we thought, ‘Let’s bring Juliet, Mike and Lima to life’,” he says.
“Even though books are old school, and these days they are in direct competition with tablets and other gadgets, kids still love them. There’s nothing like a good book and we based this one on classic adventure tales like Famous Five and Treasure Island but with a Northland flavour.”
Northland Rescue Helicopter general manager Vanessa Furze says children love the real-life helicopters and the book gives Juliet, Mike and Lima a personality all of their own.
“We’re delighted with our first story book and while Juliet is the star of this one we’re looking forward to printing a series of books with Mike and Lima as the stars.”
Furze says the story is also designed to raise awareness of what the NRH does for the Northland region and the book has an underlying safety message.
“We want everyone to be safe this summer and in the book there are some lessons about water safety and always letting someone know where you are going – but mostly it’s about telling a great adventure-filled story for kids,” she said.
The book will be officially launched at Whangarei Primary School today (Monday 12 December).
