Outstanding promotional work by the Ogilvy social media team has helped client Countdown hit the 300,000 mark in Facebook fans – placing the supermarket chain 3rd among NZ’s big brands.

The top two are Air NZ (1,375,201 likes) and Whittaker’s Chocolate (681,287).

The other placings went to Pak’nSave (275,003), Vodafone (272,407), New World (233,081), Spark (228,953), Mitre 10 (227,575), Tip Top Ice Cream (221,058), Kathmandu (215,202), The Warehouse (183,682), Lewis Road Creamery (177,976), AA Smartfuel (165,572), 2degrees (150,355), My Food Bag (122,959), Trade Me (103,984), Anchor (71,057).

Ogilvy looks after the media buying and creative, and develops strategy with Countdown’s digital marketing team.

“It’s a fantastic feat being one of New Zealand’s most followed brands on Facebook, and certainly the top supermarket brand,” said Ogilvy social strategist Mike Adly.

“The achievement goes well beyond the volume of fans; it’s the value Countdown’s content delivers, the positive sentiment it creates, the deeper engagement it drives, and the increase in consideration for the Countdown brand that follows all those things.

“At Ogilvy, we are very proud, not just of the fan count, but of the journey of transformation in the overall presence of an iconic brand like Countdown on social media. The way we see it, we’re just getting started.”

Also playing a hand Countdown’s social media success is Porter Novelli Auckland (senior account manager Morgan Bailey) which handles the PR.

“We thought it would be interesting to see how Countdown compares to some of our big brands in New Zealand on Facebook – and we were pretty chuffed,” said Porter Novelli senior account manager Morgan Bailey.
