Susan Young, joint creative director at Chemistry Interaction in Westhaven, has been appointed a Caples Awards judge – one of just six women in the 30-strong jury.

The New York-based Caples honour bold and brave ideas in direct & interactive work from around the world. There are over 20 categories, which are judged by international CDs.

Young says she’s excited at the chance to mingle with some of the best creative minds in the business, and is particularly pleased to see more women joining the jury.

‘Hanging out in the Big Apple with a bunch of scarily talented people from all over the world, talking about creativity? I couldn’t think of anything better,” she says.

“Seriously though, in a time where technology seems to be biting at the heels of good ideas, it’s good to have an awards show that proves that you can be both creative and effective. The direct and interactive world can be overly complicated, and I’ll be looking for really strong, simple ideas.

“What I particularly like about Caples is that whether your work wins or not, every entry will receive feedback from the judges. That means we’re genuinely helping to elevate the level of work the industry produces worldwide.”

Susan Young is one of NZ’s most awarded direct creatives, having won over 30 local and international awards since moving to New Zealand in late 2008.

Her work has been recognised at Cannes, Caples, Adfest and the Echoes, while this year Chemistry Interaction took home a record 16 awards, including seven Golds, at the NZDM Awards.

She says: “Female creative directors are still a bit of a rarity, especially in New Zealand, and we need to see more women judging at the big award shows. I’m glad to have an opportunity to redress the balance.”
