Heralds, Dom Post, The Press post readership gains

Three of NZ’s main daily newspapers – NZ Herald, Dominion Post, and The Press – all posted modest daily print & digital readership gains, according to the latest Nielsen National Readership Survey, released yesterday.

The survey covered Q2 2016 to Q1 2017 (April 16-March 16). It provides three measurements – the latest full-year numbers, the previous period (Q1 16 to Q4 16) and a year-on-year comparison (Q2 15 to Q1 16).

The top three gained ground in all three metrics. While the ODT gained in the previous period, it fell back in the year-on-year comparison. The Waikato Times slipped in both comparisons. (Scroll down, and click on the PDF, to see all the actual numbers in detail.)

All NZ dailies – including regional papers – fell slightly in the year-on-year totals, but the metropolitans held their positions.

Herald on Sunday up
In the weeklies results, the Herald on Sunday was the only paper to increase readership across all metrics (up y-o-y from 311,000 readers to 335,000). The Sunday Star-Times and the Sunday News both slipped.

NBR held steady.

The data also includes newspaper-inserted magazines and community papers (both with mixed results – see the PDF table).
