London and New York, 6th September 2017: A new billion-dollar media/content/technology agency – named Wavemaker – has been created by WPP/GroupM from the merger of MEC and Maxus. MEC NZ, which has a very low profile in this country, is sure to also adopt the new name.

M+AD couldn’t reach MEC NZ managing director Chris Riley for comment this morning. The agency’s phone number in Fanshawe St has been disconnected, and Riley did not answer his cellphone.

Maxus appears to have no presence in NZ.

The PR release out of London says the brand mark Wavemaker “reflects the agency’s heritage, born from WPP and GroupM”.

Tim Castree, global CEO of MEC and Wavemaker, said: “Our purpose is to provide advertisers with the power to transform and grow their business through our purchase journey obsession, with insights and data with GroupM’s proprietary global audience technology. Our Wavemaker brand and positioning is a compelling manifestation of that purpose.”

90 countries – but not Godzone!
The brand, along with a new visual identity, will go live locally as the merger completes in each country, to be finalised by January 2018. Wavemaker will have offices in 90 countries and over 8500 employees. Major global clients include L’Oréal, Vodafone, Marriott, Colgate-Palmolive and Paramount.
