AUCKLAND, Today: Just two members of the comms business – both outstanding newspaper veterans – were deemed worthy of a New Year honour in 2019. That’s right – not an ad or PR person in sight.

Al Hitchens is a former ed at Sunday News (still the best Sunday paper), who was honoured this year along with political columnist Fran O’Sullivan (a regular in the NZ Herald). Both picked up NZ Orders of Merit.

Speaking of newspapers, the Herald was the standout holiday leader in print and online – but it’s the print version that excels in summer, spread out in the shade of a pohutukawa at the beach, with a lightly chilled vino close at hand.

The paper used the holiday period well. Our eye was particularly drawn to the lengthy showcased work of cartoonist Rod Emmerson and columnist Steve Braunias – two of its greatest assets.

Today
This is our first edition after the three-week Xmas/New Year slowdown – and we’ve reprised all the significant stories we missed during the period.
