NEW YORK, Today: NZ journalism crowdfunding platform PressPatron – NZ’s hottest media industry tech start-up, according to Marketing Magazine in 2018 – has won a small share in a US$3.2 million APAC prize set up by Google to support new business initiatives.

Google News Initiative’s Innovation Challenge named 23 publishers in 14 countries to receive the cash.

The other winners in the region were Australia, Pakistan, South Korea, Singapore, Myanmar, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Mongolia, and Nepal.

The challenge was announced in November, and is aimed at strengthening Google’s relationship with publishers and helping them create new business models to sustain quality journalism, as digital advertising revenue continues to decline for most publishers.

“We wanted to see the theme of innovation that we see in the rest of Asia-Pacific come through for news,” Kate Beddoe, Google APAC head of news and publishing partnerships, told Campaign Asia-Pacific.
