LISBON, Friday: The Association of NZ Advertisers and the Comms Council have welcomed the World Federation of Advertisers call for all brands globally to hold social media platforms to account in the light of recent failures to block dangerous and hateful content.

The WFA statement was issued at the opening of the Global Marketer Conference in Portugal, which brings together 800 industry leaders – 80% of whom are brand owners.

Comms Council ceo Paul Head said, “The NZ advertising community, both clients and agencies, began a campaign for change from social media platforms and much greater content control following the horrific events in Christchurch.

“We are delighted that our message is being heard, and acted upon around the world.”

ANZA ceo Lindsay Mouat said, “All along we realised that global support, from regulators, business and the wider community would be necessary for social media to change their approach to content moderation. That the international advertiser community is responding to our call is heartening and, we believe, will be the catalyst for change.”

The WFA referred specifically to the Christchurch terrorist attack: “These are not challenges that can be addressed one by one – but need global action.

“Improving the online ecosystem is the single biggest issue the marketing industry needs to address in 2019.

“Marketers must reflect on the extent and terms on which they fund these platforms.”
