BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA, Friday: Applications have opened for the 2019 New Stars competition have opened – with an appeal to all Kiwi junior creatives aged under 30. “It would be great to have a team from New Zealand here this year, says Sydney-based organiser Barbara Messer.

Whether her invitation translates to special treatment for the Kiwis is doubtful, but this is an opportunity for young creatives to travel to South Korea to learn about the craft of advertising from leading executives.

It’s also a chance to experience first-hand the technology and trends that are emerging in North Asia and influencing the world.

“Agencies are constantly searching for creative people with a bit of experience, and New Stars is a great meeting point for us.”

New Stars is part of the wider Ad Stars festival. The programme runs over four nights from Wednesday to Saturday (August 21-24). Applications close on Friday 31 May 31. The registration fee is 1,000,000 KRW (US$780/NZ$1155) per person, but covers all accommodation, meals, parties, as well as tickets to Ad Stars 2019.

Brett Macfarlane, director at EVRY Strategic Design Lab at Method London, was one of five New Star judges at Ad Stars 2018: “Agencies are constantly searching for creative people with a bit of experience in advertising, and young creatives are constantly searching for the opportunity to show their talent.

“I think New Stars is a great meeting point for us. It is so much more than just a young creative competition.”
