You’re being chased through the Tron by Winston Peters? WTF?

AUCKLAND, Thursday: The Phantom Billstickers business would be nothing without the commitment of our billsticker crews. “That,” writes managing partner Jamey Holloway in the latest issue of his online newsletter, “is why we’re shining the spotlight on a few Phantoms.”

This time it’s Kayne Lealand who’s in the interview chair. “He runs our billsticker operations in the Tron, where at least one of the locals lives in mortal terror of a veteran politician,” says Holloway.

Lealand: “My official title is Hamilton area manager. I take care of all things Phantom in Hamilton and keep things running smoothly, just how we like it.

“Before I started at Phantom I was a builder for eight years. But I found it boring. Street life is better than building site life, in my opinion

“My day begins with making sure the Phantom Billstickers van is stocked with posters, plenty of paste, brooms, paint, anti-graffiti spray and my craft knife. Then I hit the streets, pasting and making sure the Hamilton scene is looking good.

“Every day is different, which I love. Plus you’re out and about in the city so you get a pretty good feel for what’s going on. There’s always something to see as you go out pasting, whether it’s a music or festival event happening right next to our bollards in Garden Place, people shopping, fights …

“The strangest thing that’s happened on the job was a guy who ran up to me sweating like mad, and he told me Winston Peters was chasing him. Then he ran off again looking terrified. Seemed like a nice guy though.

“One campaign I really rate is the posters we put up for Asahi, with giveaways hidden behind specially made poster frames. Their beer tastes pretty good too.

“What I love about working as a billsticker is being outside in the sun and rain. Then there’s the city vibes, finding out about gigs early, sticking bills fast and making them look good. Cool poster art, culture, and perfectly mixed poster paste.

“It’s also pretty handy knowing all the best parking spots in Hamilton.

“If I wasn’t a Phantom Billsticker I’d probably be travelling, making music and playing spacies. I’ve got my own arcade machine so there’s no need to pay 20 cents for a game.”
