AUCKLAND, Wednesday: Herald Be Well food writer Lucy Corry was named Food Communicator of the Year at The Foodies, the inaugural New Zealand Food Media Awards.

Corry also took out the award for Best Opinion Writing and was highly commended for Best Recipe Writing – Editorial.

A total of 16 awards saw the country’s best and most successful food communicators acknowledged in the mouth-watering line-up of categories. Not a single male made the list.

As well as awards for best book and recipe writing, food feature writing, opinion writing, broadcasting, social media, photography and food styling were recognised.

A President’s Award went to Niki Bezzant for her contribution to food & health communication as editor-at-large for Healthy Food Guide magazine as well as her regular contributions to Herald on Sunday and the Herald’s weekly food magazine, Be Well.

She also shared the Best Feature Writing award with The Spinoff’s Alice Neville, who won the Best Food Broadcast award.

Best Book award went to mother-&-daughter team Annabel and Rose Langbein for A Free Range Life: Together. Entries for the Best Book award received 19 entries, including highly commended books from top selling authors Chelsea Winter, Emma Galloway, Nicola Galloway and newcomer Ashia Ismail-Singer.

Editor of Waikato-based food magazine Nourish, Vicki Ravlich-Horan, was honoured for her work promoting and progressing the Waikato food scene with a President’s Award for Contribution to the Wider Food Community.

Fellow Nourish journalist Kate Underwood received the Emerging Food Communicator of the Year, having been recognised by the judges for her “evocative storytelling about food culture” and “ability to take audience on a journey, and keep them coming back for more”.

The new generation
A new generation of food communicators whose work is published in the digital space were recognised at The Foodies.

The award for Best Social Media went to Christall Lowe (@christall.lowe on Instagram) and Best Food Blog/Website was awarded to Nicola Galloway, and Highly Commended went to Emma Galloway.

Recipe writers Sophie Gray and Emma Galloway were both acknowledged for Best Recipe Writing – Commercial and Editorial respectively.

Visual food communication was also recognised, with awards in Best Food Photography – Editorial and Best Food Photography – Commercial both going to Manja Wachsmuth. Food Styling – Editorial was won by Fiona Hugues and Food Styling – Commercial was won by Jo Bridgford for her work with Killinchy Gold.

Food Writers NZ president Michelle Jones said: “The food communicators who have been recognised tonight have strengthened our already exceptional New Zealand food scene, exposing our developing multicultural foodie landscape and educating their chosen audiences on emerging food trends and opening this up to creative interpretation”.
