SYDNEY, Monday: Coromandel-based producer/cinematographer James Muir took out the Grand Prize at the ANZ Sony Alpha Photography Awards – against 4000 entries – with a powerful image titled Fresh Ice, Liquid Salt.

This was the third consecutive year a New Zealand entry has won the Grand Prize in Sydney.

New Zealand also claimed another win with chef/amateur photographer Jomel Bartolome winning the City/Street category for his Cloud 9 image – also attached.

“After taking a few photos I put my camera down, and tears filled my eyes.”

After the show, Muir said: “An iceberg drifts in the Southern Ocean somewhere near the polar circle. This was the first iceberg I had ever seen, and I was for a moment stunned by the majesty of this natural phenomenon.
