DUNEDIN, Sunday: The outgoing boss of Film Otago Southland says competition for locations – is becoming a major threat to the NZ film & commercials industry.

A report in the Herald on Sunday (attributed to Radio NZ) quotes executive manager Kevin Jennings, who said it is becoming harder to get permission in some locations.

“The advent of the streaming services drives an incredible demand for content to be created.”

“People just assume there’s lots of great locations – but the reality is we’re competing against other users – tourists, locals, businesses or farming.

Jennings, who leaves at the end of the year, says he has witnessed a shift from a focus on large international TV commercial shoots to more films and TV shows.

Pending national park management reviews for could also be a problem if access if reduced, he said.

“The advent of the streaming services has also been a gamechanger – it drives an incredible demand for content to be created.”
