SINGAPORE, Monday: The Association of NZ Advertisers and the Comms Council have received global acknowledgement for their work in combatting online harm.

At this year’s World Federation of Advertisers Awards, held virtually due to the Covid-19 crisis, ANZA received the Special Award for combatting online harm – amid the Christchurch terror attacks in 2019, which were streamed live around the world.

ANZA ceo Lindsay Mouat said: “We jointly called on online platforms to reform their policies – and that was immediately picked up globally, attracting massive international support.

“Our call was backed by the WFA and taken global.

“It was a great example of both industry groups using their collective strength to make this a global issue.”

“This subsequently led to the establishment of the WFA-led Global Alliance for Responsible Media, as well as the G20 summit in France. And an industry-wide initiative launching solutions to improve digital harm was unveiled by GARM at Davos2

“This reward is recognition of the moral response of the wider advertising industry in New Zealand.

“ANZA and the Comms Council took a strong leadership position, held the line, and kept pushing for the major social media channels to take action”

“It was a great example of the member organisations of both industry groups using their collective strength to make this a global issue, and one that our government also took on. Recognition that despite the tragic circumstances, the human side of business does the right thing”.
