AUCKLAND, Tuesday: Simon Power has advised the TVNZ board of his intention to step down as ceo, departing at the end of the financial year, 30 June.
TVNZ chair Andy Coupe thanked Power for steering TVNZ through a “period of change”.
“Simon joined TVNZ with a public media merger proposed,” Coupe said. “His strong leadership through the uncertainty that followed ensured the business remained highly engaged, ready to embrace new opportunities and focused on delivering for audiences and advertisers regardless of the outcome.
“Power had an eventful year, representing the state broadcaster through the government’s abandoned plans to merge it with Radio NZ.”
Power said: “It’s been a privilege to lead TVNZ while the business worked its way through the public media policy debate. This has been a tough decision to make, but it feels like the right time to finish.”
TVNZ will now begin a search for a replacement.
Meanwhile, BusinessDesk reporter describes Power’s move as “a shock”.
He wrote in the latest edition: “Power’s shock resignation follows rumours that broadcasting minister Willie Jackson is preparing wholesale changes to the broadcaster’s board, and reports of ongoing differences over the future direction of the media company.
“The resignation comes just 13 months after the former National cabinet minister joined the state media entity, replacing the long-serving Kevin Kenrick, who spent nine years in the top job.
“Power has had an eventful year in charge, representing the state media group through the government’s abandoned plans to merge the broadcaster with Radio New Zealand.”
