AUCKLAND, Today: New Zealand’s profile in global film production and drone technology is rising with the filming of a new campaign for the world’s first 8K flying action camera in Canterbury.
Industry experts say the 70-scene shoot, spanning snow, forest, and beach locations in just two days, couldn’t have been done elsewhere with the same scenic diversity and efficiency.
Stats NZ data shows the screen industry generates $3.5 billion annually. Attracting international productions boosts tourism, jobs, and technology transfer, enhancing New Zealand’s global recognition.
HoverAir’s X1 drone campaign raised over US$1 million in just two hours on Indiegogo, one of the fastest campaigns to reach this milestone.
Nick Hyne, Diaries Downunder director, says New Zealand’s diverse landscapes provided the perfect backdrop, allowing quick transitions from snow to surf in under two hours.
“The quality of the content created here was well beyond what we had hoped for.” – Emily Wang
“Due to the nature of our geography, the visual impact you get from our vistas is pretty hard to replicate anywhere else,” Hyne said. She says New Zealand offers great potential for both content production and testing new drone technologies, thanks to its diverse environments.
“The quality of the content created here was well beyond what we had hoped for,” Wang said, adding that millions have already viewed the ad globally.
Hyne added that the crew filmed in key locations like Mt Hutt, Banks Peninsula, and New Brighton Beach, using professional skiers and snowboarders to capture authentic action.
Special permits were required to fly drones in locations where they’re typically restricted, adding a unique challenge to the production.
