Simon Harper RIP

Advertising photographer Simon Harper (Harper Photographics) died suddenly on Monday 26 February, aged 54. He was cremated at Schnapper Rock, Albany, on Wednesday 4 March.

This terrible news has only just reached M+AD. “Simon was a terrific supporter of our site – and he knew how to market his product,” said ed David Gapes. “Barely a month went by without an update on his business, and a recent photo project.”

Gapes says one of Harper’s last acts was to lay a restraint-of-trade complaint against Ogilvy Auckland for refusing to accept his promotional emails (and complaining about them to the Privacy Commissioner – that one really hurt).”

What became of this complaint was unknown at press time.

“We farewelled a very talented photographer,” said his friend Renee Perry, a freelance hair and makeup artist & stylist for TV commercials and print advertising campaigns. “I will treasure our amazing friendship forever.

“He was a great guy, and photography was his passion.” Perry says she plans to scatter his ashes at Waipu Cove.

Perry sent us this classic verse (from an unknown writer), which her daughter read at Harper’s funeral:

Those we love don’t go away
They walk beside us everyday
Unseen, unheard, but always near
Still loved, still missed, and very dear.
