WELLINGTON, Friday: Building on its 158-year legacy of journalism, Wellington daily The Dominion Post will be removing the Dominion in its name and will re-emerge as The Post.

Owner Stuff said the change will appear in newspapers from Saturday 29 April onwards.

Editor Caitlin Cherry said in renaming the newspaper Stuff thought carefully about what it wanted to represent, both now and into the future.

“We do love the strength of the word ‘Post’,” she said. “It is a nod to our past and a hat tip to a bold new future that will keep pace with New Zealand’s changing view of itself.

The Dominion Post was formed by in 2002 when The Dominion morning newspaper merged with The Evening Post. The Dominion was first published on 26 September 1907, and The Evening Post was first published by Blundell Bros on 8 February 1865.

Stuff executive commercial director Matt Headland said: “The Dominion Post reaches 138,000 readers each day and is a trusted and relevant advertising channel connecting brands with business and political leaders, Wellingtonians and nationally.”

Cherry said: “Starting today, we’ll be sharing a celebration of the paper’s award-winning journalism and the legacy that we cherish. But it’s the future of The Post that we’re really excited about, and I can’t wait to share with you.”

“M+AD ed David Gapes was one of those dinosaurs at The Evening Post, serving a year as a copyholder in the Reading Room (at the very bottom of a journo’s professional journey) before qualifying with a four-year cadetship at the paper.”

NZME Business Desk’s Paul McBeth commented: “The news that The Dominion Post newspaper is dropping ‘Dominion’ from its banner head completed what must be one of the longest-running reverse takeovers in the media industry.

“Back in the mists of time when dinosaurs still walked the earth, The Evening Post and The Dominion were fierce rivals in Wellington fighting over their morning and afternoon markets.

“In 1972, to many people’s horror, the two papers’ owners merged to form Independent Newspapers Limited.

Enter Rupert Murdoch
“INL went on to become part of Rupert Murdoch’s march to world media domination until he realised NZ doesn’t matter and sold out. Rupert even lost faith in pay-TV in NZ, selling out of last investment here, Sky TV, in 2013.”
