To mark tonight’s big Botab show, CAANZ’s partner Flying Fish is sharing with our readers the music video made for Barnes Catmur & Friends’ Friends Electronic for winning Botab last year.
The Friends recorded BM2N, a moody, beat-driven, wrily humorous interpretation of Dave Dobbyn’s Be Mine Tonight, set in the Las Vegas Strip Club in K Rd.
“This is the first time an agency has actually gotten their shit together, recorded the track with Liquid, then made a video with Fish’n’Clips – both very prestigious prizes to the winning band every year,” says Fish MD/exec producer James Moore.
Here’s some interesting points about the track and video:
- So far it has picked up airplay on bFM and George FM, much to the surprise of the band and their fellow staff members
- The video has had local channel airplay but judged “too risqué” for Air New Zealand
- Has received rave reviews from well known rock critics such as Kate’s mum.
- Catmur’s dog George Jnr thought it was all a nice change from a day out in the boat
- No BC&F staff have given up their day jobs as yet
- Dave Dobbyn is rumoured to consider it “not too shabby” also.
This year’s Botab also features a celebrity auction to raise funds for the event’s official charity, The NZ Music Foundation. Up for sale are a VIP package to Justin Timberlake, dinner at Euro (catered personally by owner Simon Gault) with five friends plus Dave Dobbyn & CAANZ chief Paul Head, and Neil Finn’s customised Maton guitar. There’s also a raffle of a Yamaha GL-1 Guitalele and other prizes.
