Seven years after they were last held in the Capital, the Canon Media Awards are set to return to Wellington next year.
The event, the country’s most prestigious national journalism awards, will be staged at Te Papa on Friday 20 May 20. They were last held in Wellington in 2009. In recent years, the event has been held in Auckland.
The awards are managed and promoted by the Newspaper Publishers’ Association and each year attract well over 1000 entries into a host of reporting, photographic, digital, newspaper and magazine categories.
NPA chairman Michael Muir said the association felt it was time to take the awards back to Wellington and Te Papa, as the national museum and exhibition centre, was an ideal venue. Shifting the event south would enable a whole new group of media people, sponsors and guests to attend.
The awards this year attracted 1600 entries encompassing 8000 individual pieces of work in more than 60 categories. Premier awards include Newspaper, Magazine and Website of the Year while individual honours are conferred on the country’s top news reporters, feature writers, columnists, photographers and digital teams.
NPA editorial director Rick Neville said the list of categories will be updated to increase awards for digital publishing. However, the focus will continue to be on quality journalism, irrespective of what platform it appeared on.
The categories will be listed on www.canonmediaawards.co.nz next month with the entry period opening on Tuesday 8 December and closing on Friday 12 February, 2016. Tickets to the black-tie awards presentation dinner will go on sale in March.
