AUCKLAND, Today: DDB and McDonald’s have truly broken new ground with their latest tvc, which features a series of heart-warming scenarios between a mother and her growing son, and his grandmother.
What makes Then. Now. Always. so special are the racial insights. The grandmother is clearly an Asian New Zealander. Her son has inherited his mum’s Eastern looks – but is a 100% born-and-bred Kiwi.
The ad – with the power and carry of the brand behind it– is bound to change social attitudes in this country, and is to our knowledge the first time McDonald’s has tackled racial attitudes.
“M+AD sought to acknowledge the enlightened and talented people behind it – but the agency declined (for the moment) to answer our questions, citing an ‘imminent release’.”

“I’d love to help – but we can’t send you anything without client approval and we’re waiting on that,” said DDB/Mango’s Claudia Macdonald, when we sought the names of the writers, suits, film co and the director.
“You’ll get it as soon as it’s approved.”
That release is expected tomorrow.
