Lifetime Achievement salute for Bauer’s Paul Dykzeul

AUCKLAND, Monday: Former Bauer Media ceo Paul Dykzeul, who retired in May, was last night honoured with the MPA Lifetime Achievement Award – delivered with a standing ovation from 500 colleagues – at the 2019 Webstar Magazine Media Awards.

He said (in his acceptance speech): “I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been to have spent my 30-year career in this industry. I still leap out of bed every morning and am at my desk earlier than I should be.

“I developed some extraordinary friendships in my time at ACP/Bauer Media and they have enriched my life,” said Paul during his acceptance speech.

“It is a privilege to be in media. It behoves us to uphold what free media and free speech contributes to society. It is important work. Don’t underestimate your role in this democracy.”

Bauer Media’s brands were the big winners throughout the night.

NZ Listener, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, took out a double honour in the current affairs category for the prestigious Best Magazine and Best Editor awards, and Pamela Stirling was named Supreme Editor of the Year, with the judges acknowledging her as “a courageous editor who puts her readers’ interests first in an increasingly challenging environment”.

Woman’s Day, New Zealand’s highest selling women’s magazine, had a successful night in the lifestyle category, with Sido Kitchin awarded Best Editor and Cloe Willetts winning Best Journalist. The brand also won Best Lifestyle Magazine, as well as the Magshop People’s Choice award and Best Magazine Brand Marketing Campaign for its Halloween Takeover.

Bauer Media’s designers had a successful night with North & South’s Jenny Nicholls winning in the current affairs category and Nadia’s Tanya Wong for the lifestyle titles. Home New Zealand, Simply You, and Woman’s Day were also recognised for Best Cover in the home & food, lifestyle & mass market categories respectively. Metro’s Petra Leary won Best Photographer and judges said she “impressed with her fresh and invigorating perspective.”

Bauer Media’s current affairs titles saw success in a number of categories for outstanding journalism.

Diana Wichtel was named Best Columnist for NZ Listener and North & South’s Joanna Wane took the award for Best Journalist in the current affairs category. The judges said: “Her insightful and engaging portfolio encapsulates what her publication does best – great storytelling that brings a human face to important social and political issues.”

Homes To Love took out the Best Digital Brand award and Emma Land won Best Digital Editor for Now To Love. beautyheaven was awarded multiple times throughout the night. Erin Berryman was named Editorial Rising Star and the platform was named Best Rising Brand and Best Innovation to Grow Revenue and/or Audience.

The Media Collective, Bauer Media’s in-house content solution team, swept up the top awards in Best Content Marketing Campaign and Best Sales Solution for an Advertising Client for their work with Noel Leeming.

Amy Madden was the judges’ unanimous winner for Best Salesperson. They commented that “she exemplifies the partnership approach and has a deep understanding of her clients’ businesses”.
