FCB New Zealand celebrated International Women¹s Day yesterday with an agency-wide breakfast event in their Freemans Bay HQ.
The event covered the history of International Women¹s Day and women in advertising, taking a look at FCB’s US Ad Hall of Famer Shirley Polykoff¹s work as a junior copywriter in the late 1950s followed by Ilon Specht in the 1970s, and their work and development with how women¹s roles were depicted in beauty advertisements.
Polykoff is widely believed to be the model for the character Peggy Olsen in Mad Men. Ilon Specht was a copywriter in the 1970s who did pioneering work for L’Oreal at McCann-Ericksen New York (these days she’s ECD at Jordan McGrath Fifth Avenue).
The FCB event also included careers stories, advice and what to be aware of, with a Q&A panel of FCB women including MD Fleur Head, CFO Niki Pettifer, media director Sarah Beston, GADs Ruth Bradshaw & Jo Underdown, and senior account manager Laura Platts.
The agency get-together focused on encouraging all staff men and women to take note of how they think, act and their use of language around women, as well as being more aware. #BeBoldForChange
