AUCKLAND, Today: Some of the world’s top freeride mountain bikers are coming to New Zealand for the inaugural Natural Selection Bike event in Central Otago.
Around 30 elite athletes, including local heroes, will compete on Mt Dewar in Queenstown on February 15, 2025. The event will feature men’s and women’s divisions, combining Downhill, Slopestyle, and Freeride.
New Zealand’s top freerider, Robin Goomes, fresh off her Red Bull Rampage win, is excited to see the event come to Aotearoa.
“It’s so great that they’re bringing Natural Selection Bike to New Zealand,” said Goomes. “There is such a sick mountain bike scene here.”
Previously known as Proving Grounds, the event is now part of the Natural Selection Tour, expanding from snowboarding to include mountain biking, surfing, and skiing.
“We’re thrilled to give New Zealand riders the chance to compete at home against the world’s best.” – Sophie Luther
Local riders can compete for four spots at the main event through the ‘Dream Ticket’ qualifier at Dream Track, Queenstown, on February 8-9.
Event Director Sophie Luther said, “We’re thrilled to give New Zealand riders the chance to compete at home against the world’s best.”
The event is backed by MBIE’s New Zealand Major Events Fund. Kylie Hawker-Green from MBIE said, “Queenstown is a stunning location and a thrill-seekers delight.”
Natural Selection Bike also leads in sustainability, aiming to be New Zealand’s premier ultra-low-emission sporting event. It will be powered by battery storage from a hydroelectric facility, with zero landfill waste.
Commercial Director Ed Leigh said, “Everything we do, from energy use to waste management, reflects our commitment to sustainability.”
The event begins next month, with the competition broadcast “as live” on Red Bull TV in February 2025. Tickets will be available via Flicket.
