What do I look for in a great ad?

AUCKLAND, Saturday: An amiable and eloquent Sir John Hegarty opened up before an audience of around 100 ad & comms people at a Love this Speaker event in Auckland last week – held to coincide with his judging role at Stuff’s inaugural Paper Planes print creativity competition (scroll down for this link).

The great man was introduced by Colenso BBDO CCO Nick Worthington, and ECD Maria Devereux (who introduced him to “our stinking hot Kiwi summer”).

“I need to love my own work.”

Hegarty delivered his message with simple and compelling passion. Here’s a taste …

“People say I’m clever because I am able to stand in the shoes of other people.

“Well, that’s bullshit. I have no idea what a housewife thinks in Scunthorpe. And I don’t really care.

“So what do I look for in a great ad?

“Something I love – with a touch of irreverence about it. I need to love my own work.”

Colenso had the wit to capture the whole thing on video. Watch it here
