The alienation gene

AUCKLAND, Today: Apologies to Bill Ralston and the late, great Paul Holmes, named by M+AD yesterday as suspects in our coverage of Paul Little’s farewell column in the Herald On Sunday.

Little had written about “stingy friends” who wouldn’t buy a Herald Premium sub because of their aversion to “one [unnamed] columnist” who had a “gift for alienating readers”.

“I think you’ll find it’s Hosking aversion!”

For some strange reason we assumed he was talking about Ralston or Holmes (both of whom he’d referred to earlier in his column). Wrong!

“I think you’ll find it’s Hosking aversion,” wrote one adman, quicker on the uptake.

Of course it was. Mike Hosking has that alienation gene in spades.
