AUCKLAND, Thursday: Mango Communications has issued a white paper to help NZ’s hard hit tourism businesses navigate the next few months while preparing for a new future in a Covid-19 world.

The paper draws on Mango’s travel and tourism industry expertise based on a client portfolio spanning aviation, regional travel organisations, accommodation providers, travel tech, museum and local attractions.

It features key insights provided by Mango Communications’ senior practitioners, Tourism NZ ceo Stephen England-Hall, and Accor Asia Pacific COO Simon McGrath – and aims to arm struggling Kiwi tourism businesses with a framework to bounce back as restrictions ease.

Mango MD Claudia Macdonald said: “There is no best practice or playbook on how the industy is supposed to respond under such volatile circumstances.

“We issued this report initially for our travel and tourism clients but felt it might be beneficial for a wider audience.”

A summary
“Planning should start now to develop storylines for when we are able to promote non-essential trips, at Level 2,” Macdonald says.

  • Hero local people and small businesses – through media familiar with  local destinations, encouraging Kiwis to support these people
  • Op-eds and insights – dive into your data or commission simple research to inform stories about Kiwi travel habits, in your region or in general e.g. Five places Kiwis most want to visit when restrictions are lifted
  • Regional focus – inspire Kiwis to escape within their region. As we get greater freedom of movement, profile things to do in each region, say 20km, 50km and 100km from home
  • Budgets may be tight, with a focus on different price ranges – gifting experiences for unique locations or experiences will highlight the many options available
