McDonald’s goofs as Yanks confuse Ireland with England & Scotland

The long arm of Mcdonald’s appears to have reached around the world to kill its US-produced TVC for a new Irish-themed product called McDonald’s Shamrock Shake – which is being ridiculed globally for its un-Irishness.

Every attempt made by M+AD to find the ad – including via Twitter and the original Youtube posting – is now met with the words: “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!” Some sites are now offering an edited version (scroll down).

If there’s one mistake you don’t want to make, it’s confusing the Scots, Irish & Poms, as the fast-food chain is fast finding out. This one offends all three.

This year’s Irish-themed Shamrock Shake is a minty chocolate version on its thick shakes. However, the original ad (now pulled) clearly shows its US agency has no handle on the British Isles.

Under the word ‘instrumint’, a ginger-bearded chap is seen playing his Shamrock Shake like a set of bagpipes – an instrument traditionally associated with the Scots not the Irish. The man is also wearing tartan and is standing in front of Stonehenge – England’s most famous ancient monument.

And as you’d expect, Macca’s customers have taken to Twitter in droves to vent over the geographical inaccuracies. “Where are the traditional camels roaming the countyside?” wonders one jokester.

M+AD reckons they should’ve given the job to DDB NZ, who are currently doing great work for McDonald’s, and wouldn’t have had a bar of that nonsense.

And is this US McDonald’s promo – featuring Ginge – the most annoying promo ever?
