Whatever you do on Monday – don’t go near the office! It’s Labour Day, an historic marker in New Zealand commemorating the struggle for an eight-hour working day.
Kiwi workers were among the first in the world to claim this right when, on Wednesday 28 October 1840, Wellington carpenter Samuel Parnell led several thousand trade union members at a parade in the capital.
It was the climax of a long, nationwide campaign, and the Government responded by giving all employees the day off, and many businesses closed for at least part of the day.
M+AD will resume Tuesday.
