AUCKLAND, Today: Tomorrow (Wednesday 6 February) is Waitangi Day – a public holiday in New Zealand, meaning there will be no M+AD published until Thursday.

The Waitangi Treaty was signed by Māori chiefs and representatives of the British Crown and gave the Māori people the same rights as the British; recognised Māori ownership of their lands, and established a British Governor of New Zealand.

The day the treaty was signed is considered the founding day of New Zealand/Aotearoa.
