New Zealand box office booms with record-breaking weekend

AUCKLAND, Today: New Zealand cinemas just had a blockbuster weekend! Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, and A Quiet Place: Day One brought in a staggering 254,000 admissions – the biggest since Barbenhimer in July 2023.

Inside Out 2 led the charge, raking in $295 million worldwide, the highest global animated opening ever. It has now surpassed a billion dollars, becoming the fastest animated film to do so.

In New Zealand, Inside Out 2 attracted over 114,000 viewers in its first weekend, earning $2.0 million. This makes it the second-biggest animated opening in New Zealand’s history, just behind Shrek 2 in 2004.

But the success wasn’t just about Inside Out 2. Despicable Me 4 added 46,000 admissions, reaching a total of 134,000. A Quiet Place: Day One took third place, while Ka Whawhai Tonu – Struggle Without End and Kalki 2898AD rounded out the top five.

He added, “Expect more blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, Joker: Folie à Deux, Wicked, and Gladiator. Plus, family hits like Mufasa: The Lion King and Moana 2 will make this year unforgettable.”
