AUCKLAND, Today: New Zealand’s food writers have only a few weeks to enter The Foodies, the new annual awards for food media.

The awards will acknowledge outstanding communication about food across books, print, online and broadcast media. The Foodies are presented by Food Writers New Zealand, the organisation representing New Zealand’s top food communicators.

Food writers NZ president Michelle Jones said: “The Foodies recognise the enormous contribution food writers make to the development of New Zealand cuisine and enriching Kiwi culture by improving knowledge and refining attitudes towards food.”

The Foodies takes the place of New Zealand’s previous food writing awards, the Culinary Quills, which were last presented in 2015.

“We have not only spread the net wider than before to accommodate new media, but we will also use an online platform for entries, judging and member voting in most categories,” Jones said. “By opening the judging to all our members, we can tap into the wealth of expertise our members have across all facets of food communication.”

“The awards acknowledge communication about food across books, print, online and broadcast media.”

Melanie Rushton, marketing manager of Meadow Mushrooms, key sponsor of the awards, said: “We are excited to be able to support Food Writers New Zealand and our national food movement through these awards. We look forward to celebrating the best of what we do and to inspiring others.”

The awards will cover a wide scope of food media, with awards for food writing (best book, best editorial recipes and best commercial recipes); food journalism (best feature and best opinion writing); food communication (best blog/website, best food broadcast, best social media); and visual awards (editorial and commercial styling, best editorial and commercial food photography).

In addition, the judges have the discretion to make an award for the Emerging Food Communicator and Food Communicator of the Year.

All awards are open to any work published during the 2018 calendar year. The only exception is the book category, which is open to books published between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2018.

Entries for The Foodies close on Sunday 30 June, with the finalists announced by Friday 19 July. The winners will receive their awards at a gala dinner on Monday 26 August.
