AUCKLAND, Wednesday: New Zealand Woman’s Weekly journalists left stranded by Bauer’s collapse have formed an email news service, A Quiet Cuppa.

Created by former NZWW editor Alice O’Connell, former deputy editor Kelly Bertrand and former food editor Nici Wickes, A Quiet Cuppa delivers stories, recipes, travel tips, puzzles and more direct inboxes several times a week.

“In the weeks after losing my job at the Weekly , it was the connection with our readers that I found myself missing the most,” O’Connell said.

“A Quiet Cuppa will initially be a free service before switching to a paid subscription model, with a small monthly fee.”

“After talking with Kelly and Nici we realised we felt the same, so we thought, ‘Well, why does that have to come to an end?’

“And so A Quiet Cuppa was born.

“Engaging through email on the Substack platform is a very different way of talking to readers, but we’re excited to introduce our audience to something new.

“We’ve just launched, but already we’re able to be in constant conversation with our readers and use that dialogue to quickly shape our content. That connection is so very important – particularly in today’s world – and we’d spent many weeks worrying about former readers of the Weekly , particularly the older ones, who had relied on that touch point. We’re thrilled to be able to open up a new line of communication.”

A Quiet Cuppa will initially be a free service before switching to a paid subscription model, with a small monthly fee required to access premium content.
