AUCKLAND, Tuesday: M+AD ed David Gapes yesterday officially received his Officer of the NZ Order of Merit award from Governor-General Patsy Reddy at Government House in Epsom.

He was accompanied at the ceremony by 11 other Queen’s Birthday Award inductees, including filmmaker Dame Fran Walsh (who received a DNZM for services to film). Gapes’ gong was for services to broadcasting, and the music business.

“It was an extraordinary experience to be recognised by the Queen of New Zealand after a lifetime of misbehaviour.”

A 12th medal – an ONZM – was awarded posthumously to the late Malcolm Black, who was frontman for Dunedin band Netherworld Dancing Toys (For Today), manager of Crowded House and Neil Finn, and the NZ representative on the board of the Australasian Performing Right Association.

His 30-year career in music, ended with his death earlier this year from cancer. His gong was accepted by his wife, Julia.

Later, Gapes said: “It was an extraordinary experience to be recognised by the Queen of New Zealand after a lifetime of misbehaviour.”
