AUCKLAND, Today: Scapegrace Distilling Co. wrapped up its nationwide quest for a cocktail that screams New Zealand, crowning The Taniwha as the champ.
Bartenders from all over threw their hats in the ring for the Scapegrace: Uncharted Spirits competition, creating drinks that epitomise New Zealand’s unique flavours. Over 60 concoctions came in, and the finalists found themselves shaking it up in Central Otago for the top spot.
Auckland’s own Cal Ross mixed up the winning cocktail, The Taniwha. It’s a blend of Scapegrace Black, local Syrah, and a special “Bushfire Shrub” that wowed the judges with its sophisticated flavour profile.
“The Taniwha stood out to a great degree in a field of already exceptional finalists drinks,” noted Mikey Ball, Scapegrace’s Product Development & Advocacy Manager.
“The drink is a thoughtful and well executed example of depth of story and research that defined the Fiordland region in liquid. It also showcased a wonderful balance of conventional and local ingredients that painted the perfect picture.”
“This competition encourages bartenders to dive into the culture and natural resources of unfamiliar regions, expanding their understanding and introducing new flavor profiles into their work.” – Mikey Ball
The competition was not just about mixing drinks but inspiring bartenders to delve into the natural treasures of their assigned regions.
“We want each drink to reflect the diversity of New Zealand’s regions,” said Ball.

Inspired by Central Otago’s local flavours, where Scapegrace is erecting New Zealand’s largest distillery, the contest was a hit.
Cal Ross, mixing at Panacea in Auckland, shared his excitement. “What a ride,” said Ross. “I’m chuffed to not only win but to tick off a few things on my bucket list on the way. The highlight was meeting some amazing people and fantastic competitors.”
Ross’s prize? A cool $1000 plus a trip back to Central Otago in 2025 to judge the next round of the competition.
