AUCKLAND, Today: Ad legend Paul Catmur – co-founder of Barnes Catmur & Friends Dentsu Auckland – is pleased with reactions to his Truth and Soul Incorporated podcast – now into its 6th episode.

“We’ve had a great response to the first four episodes of the Truth and Soul NZ advertising podcast – some of it even positive,” he told M+AD this morning.

“As well as insights into the world of ECDs Damon Stapleton and Regan Grafton, there have been great reactions to the world of a client, as provided by Mike Watson previously of Sky TV, and a number of people have described Jill Brinsdon’s talk as inspirational as she tells how she became New Zealand’s first-ever female creative director.”

Josh Moore
“Episode 5 features Josh Moore, currently of Pitchblack Partners (and previously of a number of agencies in New Zealand, England and Australia).

“He shares thoughts on his rise to the top, some of his work such as Tui, Hallensteins and Glassons, and Vodafone. He also talks at length about the amazing worldwide success of the McWhopper campaign and what it’s like winning so many awards that Steve Kane’s suitcase broke.

“Episode 6 features ex-adman and struggling artist Dick Frizzell who answers the question: ‘Where did it all go wrong?’

“It must have been a terrible time for him sliding down from the peak of producing advertising for the likes Yates Slug Pellets down to the depths of being one of New Zealand’s most lauded and prolific artists.

“Dick shares insights on how to get a pay rise, how to get fired by mistake and how best to utilise child labour to help grow your career. In return I teach him punctuation and insult his art direction.

“Curiously nobody has yet mentioned how expert the interviewer is at drawing insights from the guests and what a wonderful calming voice he has, but it can only be a matter of time.

“Hopefully this podcast will prove of interest to the one or two of you out there who work in or around the New Zealand advertising industry, listen to podcasts, and have a high boredom threshold,” he says.

“Although this podcast is generally about the creative side of advertising, we’ve expanded it to include suits, clients, directors, music composers, bartenders and general hangers-on – in other words, anyone who might be interesting despite considerable evidence to the contrary.

“There will be a small prize for the first email which explains why we use the name Truth and Soul Incorporated.”

The single-minded goal of this podcast is to educate, inform and entertain:

  • To provide a loose oral history of the last twenty years of the NZ advertising industry in the mistaken belief that anyone other than us really cares.
  • To give young people an idea of the industry and the characters within and thus to put them off before they decide to apply for employment and waste their lives.
  • To provide the casual listener with something marginally more interesting to occupy their ears with than the other passengers on the bus.

“If you like the idea and wish to shower praise, have a question about a particular podcast, or there’s someone you’d like to hear from (especially if it’s you), please let us know.

“If you hate the podcast and think it’s a dumb idea then there’s really no need to be a dick, just don’t listen any more.

“There will be a small prize available for the first email which explains why we use the name Truth and Soul Incorporated.

“Any views expressed on this podcast are those of the individuals and not representative of their employers … unless of course their employers like them – in which case that was the plan all along.
